Boathouse Rules

Conduct and Discipline

● Service & Participation

  • Members are expected to actively contribute to club operations, including volunteering and participating in maintenance tasks

● General Conduct

  • Members must follow the Club’s Bylaws, Boathouse Rules, and Captain’s directives
  • Respectful behavior is required, and misconduct, equipment misuse, or safety violations may lead to disciplinary action
  • Members must maintain high standards of behavior and sportsmanship
  • All members and guests are expected to treat others with respect when representing the club, including in the boathouse, on the water, at regattas, and while wearing Undine gear
  • Disrespectful or exclusive behavior will not be tolerated
  • Members are responsible for their own conduct and that of their guests

● Boathouse and Equipment Use

  • Access is limited to designated hours
  • Equipment must be signed out and returned properly, and damage or malfunctions should be reported immediately to the Captain
  • Unauthorized modifications to Club equipment are prohibited
  • All equipment must be checked for tightness and proper operation before each row
  • Guests who exhibit an interest in continued rowing after 3 guest rows are encouraged to apply for membership

Safety and Operations

  • Members must adhere to swimming requirements, follow “Rules of the River” for navigation, avoid hazardous areas, and ensure all members and guests complete a mandatory liability waiver
  • Members must complete safety orientation and follow emergency procedures
  • Proper safety gear, including life jackets, is mandatory, and rowing must follow designated routes with the Captain’s instructions
  • Stern and Bow lights are required during dark/dawn/dusk hours and must be mounted on the boat
  • The Captain or Coach may prohibit outings based on their assessment of weather/water conditions

Equipment and Repairs

  • Fleet Management
  • Boats are color-coded by level
    • Black for A (Advanced; non-Racing Team members must have permission from the Head Coach or Captain)
  • Blue for B (Intermediate)
    • Yellow for C (Novice)
  • Club oars are assigned to specific boats, and all boats are standard rigged
    • 4x @ 158
    • 2x @ 159
    • 1x @ 160
  • Any changes to club boats require approval from the Coach or Captain/Lieutenants and will be performed by either, unless permission has been granted
  • Idle boats (not rowed for 2 years) or those whose owners are in arrears for two years will be decommissioned (derigged and relocated)
  • Decommissioned boats whose owners remain in arrears for three years – and who have not made alternative plans – will become property of Undine and may be listed for sale
  • C and B boats shall not be racked above A boats
  • Club singles shall not be racked higher than head-height on vertical racks

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Follow Boat Bay and Erg Room placards for equipment care and damage reporting
  • Members must take responsibility for avoidable damage to Club boats and pay for repairs, up to $500 (insurance deductible)
  • An operational guide provides details related to oar and boat maintenance and turnover

Storage Solutions

  • Temporary storage options for boat covers, oars, and boats must be approved by the Captain
  • Taped-Off Zones designate storage areas for slings, stairs

Facility Use and Rules

Boathouse Operations

  • The Captain holds authority over boathouse operations, rules, and safety
  • Only members in good standing and their guests may access the boathouse during designated hours
  • Members must sign out equipment before use, return it in clean and proper condition, and report any damage or malfunctions to the Captain

Communications

  • Placards in the erg room and boat bay provide information on courtesies, damage reporting, erg usage, and equipment care before, during, and after use
  • Whiteboards are to be used to communicate hazards and other observations

Training and Racing Activities

  • Use of club equipment and participation in races requires Coach or Captain approval
  • Racing Team members are expected to attend scheduled practices and follow the training plans
  • Unauthorized use of racing equipment is prohibited
  • Boats must be rerigged within 24 hours after return from regatta travel
  • Only club members may row singles, bow doubles and quads, and must be approved by Coach or Captain for A (Advanced) level boats

Enforcement and Penalties

  • Repeated violations will be handled by the Captain and, if necessary, the Elective Committee
  • Non-compliance may result in warnings, suspension, or membership revocation
