EXPERIENCED ROWERS WANTED FOR SUMMER RACING PROGRAM

Undine Barge Club, the preeminent sculling club on Philadelphia’s Boathouse Row, is looking for experienced rowers who are interested in summer racing and improving technical rowing skills through sculling.

The qualities that we seek:
– Desire to race, willing to commit to our program for the summer;
– Some rowing experience (sculling experience is even better);
– Current university students or recent alumni, men and women.

What you can expect:
– Excellent, attentive and individualized coaching in sculling technique;
– Opportunity to race in sculling events at the Schuylkill Navy Regatta, Independence Day Regatta, Club Nationals, and Canadian Henley (for those who progress quickly enough to be competitive there);
– Learning to scull and rowing small boats will improve your technical skills. The technical improvements will carry over to your college programs and club rowing in the fall.

Undine Barge Club has a proud history of 155 years of sculling excellence. Since 1995, Coach Joe Quaid and Assistant Coach Mike Naughton have guided Undine rowers to achieve national and international prominence, including the following accomplishments:
– Since 1995, Undine athletes have won over 100 medals in national-level sculling competition (Nationals and Canadian Henley).
– The men have medaled 97 times at national sculling events (club and elite). We have also won several Canadian Henley events, and some sweep events at Nationals.
– The women have medaled over 40 times at national sculling events (club and elite), most of these since 2005. They have also won several Canadian Henley events, and the Head of the Charles Regatta (including the course record in the LWT4+).
– Since 2000, we have also had at least 10 athletes win trials and represent the US at World Championships.

JUNIOR SUMMER RACING PROGRAM

The Undine Barge Club junior rowing program will provide both male and
female high school athletes with a competitive summer racing experience. The
goal is to instruct athletes on all aspects of rowing necessary to prepare for
collegiate and national-level competition. Undine juniors will not be a
recreational summer rowing camp. The objectives are to promote learning,
teamwork, and training in a fun and competitive atmosphere. Additionally, we
seek to reinforce the concept that achieving success in rowing is not just
dependant on erg scores or technical skill. It requires proficiency in both
mental toughness and working well with others.

Undine athletes will be exposed to different types of competition that may vary
from their high school experience. Athletes will be required to learn both
sculling and sweep rowing, and possibly have the opportunity to race in either.
All summer regattas have age-bracketed racing for Junior-16 & Junior-18 age
groups, and this also applies to Canadian Henley. Unlike the spring scholastic
season, our junior rowers will be able to row in more than one event per
regatta. Therefore, our three-regatta race card can provide as much or more
racing experience than a high school rower sees from the March to May
scholastic season.

Athletes who compete for Undine will benefit from top-level competitions that
may provide visibility for recruitment by some of the top colleges and
universities. Undine will openly invite collegiate coaches to attend practices
and speak with athletes who are looking to improve their rowing skills and
sharpen their competitive edge.

Athletes will need to provide their own transportation to and from practices and
regattas. Practices will be held Monday through Friday with no practice on
weekends. Athletes will only be required to race on specified weekends.

Clarification:
The Undine Juniors program is open to juniors only. A junior is a competitor who in the current calendar
year does not attain the age of 19, or who is and has been continuously enrolled in secondary school as a
full time student seeking a diploma. A competitor thus ceases to be a Junior after December 31 of the
year of his or her 18th birthday, or of the year in which he or she completes the 12th grade of secondary
school, having been a full time student, whichever is later.
A junior 16 is a competitor who will not attain the age of 17 in the current calendar year.
